This is the pottery studio where I took classes – Cone 11 – located in my favourite Abbotsford Convent. Ilona is a great teacher and I think they are taking enrloments for the next year right now. Classes fill really quick: there is only four people in each.

I made these tea mugs during the pottery classes I was taking during the last few months. It's hard to say from this image, but they are very big, just the way I like it. I wish I had time to continue with the classes. I'll show you the studio after the weekend.

I have another book I wanted to show you, a recent purchase. It's 'Elliott Smith' by Autumn de Wilde. Have you noticed I have a thing for music photography?

There's so much I love about this book: a cd of previously unreleased live performance, songs written on the back of the receipts, many long interviews, and polaroids, contact sheets and many beautiful photographs by Autumn. I wanted to photograph every page.

There is the funniest foreword as well – Beck and Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie talking about their experiences of being photographed. Some things made me giigle:

'When any one of us in Death Cab hear the words photo and shoot put together we all groan and a sense of dread comes over the room'

and some really good comments about the way Autumn photographs:

'I've seen this in all her photos, that in the end people still look like themselves. (...) There's something in a photograph that you can't see, but feel ... when the person behind the camera cares about what they are photographing. And that's something you pick up when you're looking at the photo.' (Beck Hansen)

Autumn de Wilde has a beautiful blog, she has also released a book on Death Cab for Cutie and a new one on Beck, which I don't have (yet).

I really enjoyed reading this interview with the creators of the beautiful Plant Journal today. I think I missed out on the first issue, but I will be sure to get my hands on the next one.

Also, Luci has started a tumblr, and it's really hard to not waste the whole day just looking at all those images. We have started working on our collaboration, I can't tell you much right now, but it will be a publication. We'll share more soon.

I was looking through the Smith Journal today and realised I never showed you this shoot: my favourite. This images were taken for the feature on brothers who have supported each other through difficulties in life and their relationships. I really admire people behind Frankie (and Smith journal) for writing on subjects like that. It's something we can all relate too, it's simply so human and yet somehow there's just nobody ever talking and writing about it, at least not in press.

Huge thank you to people who share their stories, I don't think it's easy for them.

I've been printing folios, writing applications and proposals and working on a new website for myself instead. Need to get my hands on the the new issue of Frankie to read an interview with Tom by Benjamin Law. We had a really interesting conversation during the shoot, I wish talking to people and shooting portraits at the same time could somehow work, I had to stop myself all the time.

It seems to me that all the challenges in my work in the last couple of months had to do with locations, what they add to to the images and the narrative. I came across this article on Too Much Chocolate yesterday – it's really interesting:

Cody Cloud: I work very instinctively, not immediately realizing why I’m drawn to a spot. It always dawns on me later that light and color is what caught my attention, not just a spot that gives me a funny feeling.

Georgia Kokolis: I always look for lighting elements that have a blinding quality to them, there has to be a highlight or backlight the gives it a cinematic feel. I approach my images instinctually a story sometimes develops from that process and sometimes it is predetermined. I prefer the non-linear approach to my work, as this is really the way I see things.

We had really special lunch at Kappaya and wondered around the Convent. I think it was more then month ago now, I've misplaced this roll of film and only just found it.

I really want to go back, I think it might be my favourite cafe in Melbourne now. The food is amazing and they serve everything in handmade pottery. We had green tea mousse for desert (in case you're wondering what's on the middle photo).

Lauren Dukoff "Family"

This book was on my list for a very long time, and finally I received my copy, and it's absolutely amazing in so many ways. Lauren's story in the beginning of the book is really inspiring, there are so many paragraphs I want to quote.

"We shared a ride back to Camber Sands, and Jack played for a small group of people in our hotel room. He played twelve songs, sitting in a chair in front of a sliding glass door; behind him, through the glass, was the late afternoon and the small courtyard with its low walls. At first I was nervous taking photographs – of Jack, of Devendra with his eyes closed listening to the music – but I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn't capture this moment. I found a new sense of comfort taking pictures that evening. I could hide behind my camera and put all my attention into the picture taking process." - LD, Family

I've been listening to Devendra Banhart's music for a long time, and I loved seeing him and other musicians I know and like photographed in such an intimate way. I guess I always loved very personal photographs, but when relationships, admiration and passion define photographs as much as beautiful light and compositions, the result is just so powerful.

a little zine I made last week

Last week was pretty quiet, so I decided to make a very small zine. Having just completed a project spanning over two years, it was lovely to make something from start to finish in just a couple of days.

I went for a long walk in my favourite suburb and shot a couple of rolls of black and white film (something I've been meaning to do for a while!). Just small thing that made me smile: crazy planters that look like zeppelins, a bush covered in pink flowers in the middle of the winter, graphic tree shadows on a sunny day and a tiny strawberry bush growing in between cobble stones in the alley.

I've put the images together to make an eight page concertina zine, it's inkjet printed and 12 × 10.5 cm. The zines are available form my friend Katy's lovely new online shop One Little Loop, and I'm really happy to be a part of it.

I love photographing plants, and I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Brian posted some incredible photographs of roses today, I especially love this one.

Sometimes I have this distinct feeling after I finish a shoot, as if I have just received a gift. A person, who has been a stranger a couple of hours ago, decides to open up in front of the camera, to reveal a part of themself that is not always visible. It's magic when it happens, I can only hope to capture some of it in the final photograph.

Justin Williams is a dear friend and one of the artists featured in Environments. Below are images from his studio, one from the book, and one out take. I was really concerned with having certain narrative in the book, connection between the images, even if I couldn't always explain why certain thigs didn't work for me, I went with my feeling. That's why perhaps there are quiet a few images from each shoot that haven't been included. Yet I like them on there own.

I was really excited to photograph Marc Martin's studio. These amazing huge windows and the light streaming in.... It's really dense, with a lot of subtle textures and details, if you look closely, and Marc's artwork, bits and pieces of his illustrations everywhere. I loved Marc's previous book called Forest, that's how I came across his work originally. Forest is sold out now, but he has just published a new artist book that looks really special too.

I have such a huge respect and admiration for Ellie's work. She's committed to making clothes that are truly sustainable, unique, but above all look incredible. It's sort of hard to grasp how two recycled mens shirt can be turned into a stunning dress, but that's exactly what happens in Ellie's studio.

Ellie from Extracurricular magazine did a little interview with me about my book. Her sweet little mag will be out tomorrow, so I've decided it's time to share these exciting news with you. My book Environments is nearly finished now and is going to be published in early may. That's what the cover looks like:

As you probably already know if you read this blog, I've decided to compile my photographs taken in various creative studios mostly in and around Melbourne into a book.

I wanted to thank you for all the encouraging emails and comments I've received while working on the project, I don't think I'll be able to do it without all the support! I'll be back in Melbourne in a week, sharing more images, introducing all the artists featured in the book and adding prints to the shop.

Elizabeth posted some images we worked on earlier this year, and I'm happy I can share my favorites too. As it happens, not all of them could be used, it's nice to be able to show them here. It's been such an amazing project to work on, I'm really grateful that Liz has so much trust in me!

I have to remember to take more silly snapshots. They somehow make me very happy. This beautiful moss was somewhere in Tasmania, and bikes are from Fitzroy. I'm sorry I've been quiet here, a lot of exciting things are keeping me very busy and I can't wait to be able to share them with you.

I met Yoko at ceramic classes I took a couple of years ago, and recently I've been seeing a bit of her again as she is working in our favourite cafe. We went to see her work at Fitzroy Gallery recently, it's quiet amazing. I have a little snapshot for you, but make sure you have a look at her website too.

I'm back from Tasmania with a backlog of news and photographs to share. Where do I start? Thanks to some incredibly supportive friends some images of mine are in the latest Frankie, so humbled!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing The Drones at the Forum this friday, so I thought I'd share some photographs of Gareth Liddiard today. A very different shot ended up in the magazine, perhaps I'll leave that one for tomorrow.

Today I wanted to show you where Elizabeth makes her beautiful PRIMOEZA scarves. I'm glad that she is a part of my Environments series, which are almost complete. I've been busy working on a very special project in the last couple of weeks. I've mentioned we were waiting for the sun and ended up shooting in pretty amazing light.

I'm a scarf person ( I'm often wearing one even when it's really hot in summer) and I got really excited when I've discovered these clever scarves by Melbourne based designer Primoeza a few weeks ago: instant love. Thanks to the powers of internet, I got to meet Elizabeth and to photograph some of the scarves for her. Will have to wait for quiet some time before I can post the pictures, the snapshots and the shadows will have to do for now. Can you see a cat in the picture? Label is named after Elizabeth's two cats, so sweet.

I might be a bit obsessed with photographs of plants, I find succulents especially photogenic. While visiting a dear friend of mine yesterday I couldn't help myself and had to take those snaps.

I've been a bit quiet here recently, but I'm back with lots of new things to show.

It took a few months for the latest issue of Apartamento magazine to arrive here... totaly worth the wait though! I love their choice of people, images, and it's pretty much the only magazine that I actually read cover to cover, because normally I just look at the pictures, you know.

I wish I'd have some of my photographs in Apartamento... maybe one day.

Some spaces are not easy to photograph, but I really wanted to share this one with you: Miso and Ghostpatrol work here. Their work is so special to me that I'm kind of lost for words, you just have to follow the links and see with your own eyes. I'm super happy these guys live in Melbourne and I get to discover their new street pieces now and then on my walks.

It's kind of hard to notice first and even harder to photograph, but pretty much every surface in the studio is covered with stickers or drawings like this little guy on the stool.
